Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is the healing and restorative practice of yogic sleep.

In yoga nidra you are guided through a series of mental exercises and visualisations that will allow your mind and body to slip into a deep state of relaxation.  During yoga nidra the brain switches from beta to alpha waves (the brain wave frequency that links conscious thought with the subconscious mind). In alpha state serotonin is released, which helps you to reach a transformational experience of inner calm. Fluctuations in the mind decrease and you begin to feel more at ease and a deep feeling of tranquillity and relaxation occurs. As you move deeper into the practice the brain will then begin to emit delta waves, mimicking what happens when we enter a deep restful sleep.

What to expect:

This is a fully guided practice and no experience is necessary.
Participants should be to get down to the floor to rest.
Yoga nidra is practiced lying on a yoga mat (we provide bolsters for under the knees to relieve low back tension, and an extra blanket if needed for cushioning and warmth, or as a pillow). Participants may also lie on their side if pregnant or if lying flat is not comfortable.

What to wear/bring:

Wear comfortable clothes for relaxation.
During deep relaxation participants body temperature often lowers so you may wish to wear socks and a sweater.
Blankets will be provided for comfort, however you may wish to bring an extra blanket or pillow to make sure you stay warm and comfortable.
If you have a yoga mat please bring it with you. Studio mats are available to rent ($2) if required, and a selection of mats available for purchase if preferred.
